The Cognitive Trapeze & Pedagogical Swing Model
My theoretical work explores the dynamic relationship between language, thought, and technological mediation.
I integrate philosophy of language, cognitive science, linguistics, AI‑augmented learning, and digital literacies.
The central idea is simple:
Cognition is movement — not a static state.
Learners constantly shift between stability (concepts, schemas, prior knowledge) and exploration (hypotheses, interpretations, problem‑solving).
The Cognitive Trapeze & Pedagogical Swing Model formalizes this dynamic.
1. The Cognitive Trapeze
The Cognitive Trapeze describes how learners navigate between:
- linguistic structures
- cognitive representations
- conceptual anchors
- technological tools
Learning is a trajectory, not a linear process.
This model explains how AI tools influence:
- conceptual development
- reasoning strategies
- metacognitive awareness
- multimodal understanding
The Three Feedback Loops
The Cognitive Trapeze functions as a cybernetic learning system, structured around three nested feedback loops:
- Short loop (Learner – AI – Knowledge): Instant correction during oral reading. The AI captures pronunciation via ASR, compares it to the target text, and delivers immediate multimodal feedback (visual, auditory, haptic).
- Medium loop (Teacher – AI – Learner): Aggregated performance data (reading time, recurrent errors) is provided to the teacher, who adjusts parameters (text choice, difficulty thresholds) or intervenes directly.
- Long loop (Teacher – Knowledge – AI): The teacher selects and sequences content. The AI, using language models and learner corpora, suggests tailored exercises and reorganizations, enabling massive differentiation.
Embodied Knowledge
The model integrates the concept of embodied knowledge (Varela, Thompson & Rosch, 1991). Learning is not merely abstract; it is multi-sensory. The AI presents knowledge through:
- Auditory modality: correct pronunciation model, slowed or contrasted playback of the learner’s own voice.
- Visual modality: dynamically annotated text (highlighted syllables, intonation graphs).
- Haptic modality: brief vibrations to mark syllabic rhythm or omissions.
These feedbacks are not merely corrective; they are contingent and adaptive, ensuring redundancy that favors memorization and automatization.
2. The Pedagogical Swing
The Pedagogical Swing extends the Cognitive Trapeze to educational contexts.
It describes how teachers and learners co‑construct meaning through:
- scaffolding
- multimodal explanations
- adaptive feedback
- collaborative reasoning
- AI‑supported mediation
The swing represents the rhythm of learning:
alternating between stability (understanding) and exploration (discovery).
3. Contribution to Cognitive Science
The model provides:
- a unified framework for language–thought dynamics
- a tool for analyzing AI‑mediated learning
- insights into multilingual and neurodiverse cognition
- a bridge between theoretical and applied research
It addresses a major gap:
the lack of integrated models capturing how language and thought co‑evolve in AI‑mediated environments.
4. Link to My MSCA Project
The Cognitive Trapeze is the theoretical backbone of my MSCA project Cognitive Trapeze: Modeling Language–Thought Dynamics in AI‑Augmented Learning.
It supports:
- conceptual modeling
- cognitive and linguistic experiments
- computational simulation
- multilingual data analysis
